    Travelling Without Parents

Hello, My name is Sebastian and together with my little brother and a family friend we're going to Atlanta, GA this summer to visit our family friend's brother and his kids. The question we have is if any problems whatsoever might occur due to the fact that my brother and I are both under-aged and we are not related to our family friend, with whom we will travel (none of our parents will follow). We have heard that it is illegal to cross state borders with children that you are not related to - in other words a federal offense. Is this true? What do we need to do to avoid a situation of this kind? Thanks in advance, Sebastian

    Hi Sebastian,

I think that the main issue with crossing state lines with an unrelated minor has to do with illegal activity.  If someone is already doing something illegal with the child, by crossing the state line, the punishment may be much greater than if they stayed within one state.

I believe that it is pretty common for family's to bring along their child's friend on a vacation.  So I do not think that you and your brother traveling with a family friend should be a problem.  But just to be on the safe side, I suggest having your parents provide a written letter of approval to show that your friend has their permission.
