About six years ago, I was hosting a travel chat on the old MSN network. While dispensing travel information about the USA to overseas tourists, I encountered a young French girl who was interested in learning about US culture. I chatted with her weekly, and sent her a few postcards from various US destinations. She expressed an interest in visiting the USA.
I eventually invited her to visit with my family if she ever came to the USA, and offered her hospitality in our home. She was very excited about the idea and asked if her parents were also invited. I said, of course.
The next week, her father came to the chat session and asked me if I had truly invited them all to my home. I assured him that I was serious. Over the next weeks, they made plans to come to the USA for the Christmas holiday season. I met them at the airport, and took them to our home. Our family spent several days with this excited girl from France and her parents. We showed them the Christmas lights and the local attractions. We cooked a grand Christmas feast for them. We had a wonderful time together. They got a chance to experience a real US Christmas celebration with an American family, and we got a chance to meet a wonderful little girl and her parents. Today, she is a young lady that has many fond remembrances of the USA. She has chosen to study at an American university.
If more people in the USA would spend a little bit of time welcoming visitors from other countries, they might gain a better understanding of other cultures. They might spread a bit of understanding about US culture. We might move a little bit closer to a peaceful world.
Please consider offering your friendship to foreign tourists as an e-mail pal or as a supplier of advice on this bulletin board. Let's show the world that people in the USA are friendly, kind and compassionate and generous to strangers. | |
