I live in Brazil, and I'm not used to drive in the snow. So, I have some questions about this trip.
How is the road between these locations? Is it easy to drive in Sierra Nevada during the winter?
How long does it take to go from Las Vegas to South Lake Tahoe? Can I make this trip in one day,
since dawning is later and sunset is earlier in winter? Is it adviseble to rent a 4-wheel drive car?

Thanks,

Though I love the region I´m living, my favourite country are USA. Meantime I traveled three times there and, excepting the two stays in NYC (the greatest town in world), I made trips through the Northeast in 2005 and the Southwest in 2008.

Both journeys were amazing, although the regions are as different as you can imagine.

The trip around the northeast states started in NYC, next stop was Mystic with a visit of the nice Mystic Seaport Museum. Along the coast we went to Boston. After visiting NYC it was a totally different experience. Here in Germany we say, time goes as half as fast in Boston as in NYC. You know, what I mean? One of the highlights there was the visit to John J.Kennedy´s birthplace.

Afterwards we went over Pemaquid Point, one of the most photographed light house on east coast, and Camden (with a hike to Mt.Battle and Mt.Megunticook) to Acadia N.P. The view from Cadillac mountain over sea and the region is simply great. After a short stop in Farmington we traveled to the White Mountains with a trip up to the top of Mt.Washington. We did it by our own car, not by the steamway. Our luck was a absolutely cloudless sky with fine temparatures. I forgot to say, that we traveled in Octobre. A feeling like in our homeland, we live near the Alps, the famous mountains in Europe.

Then we went through the Green Mountains to Lake Schroon in the Adirondacks. The way there was not worth to tell about, except the short passage over Lake George with a little ferry and a visit to Fort Ticonderoga.

From there we went to Lake Placid, Watertown and finally to Lockport. This was our location for two visits of Niagara Falls, one in Canada and the other in USA. Both were absolutely undescribable.

Final destination was Buffalo, from where we went back to Germany.

The trip last year started in Frisco International Airport. By rental car we went to Monterey and then Highway N° 1 south to San Diego. Especially the trip through the 17-Miles-Drive, sea lions near Malibu and much more are a must. In San Diego we visited Seaworld, Gaslamp Quarter and Seaport.

After that we traveled with a stop in Kingman and a detour over Route 66 to Grand Canyon (south rim). What should I say, it´s undescribable, no words, no pictures can give back, how great this region is. But that was not the only highlight of our journey. After three days we went to Page near Lake Powell. You should take time to ride a motor boat over the sea. But a absolutely must is a visit to Upper Antelope Canyon. Though it´s not a true Canyon this place is a miracle. Through Monument Valley we went to Moab near Arches N.P. All the arches, small and big, all the rocks like Balanced Rock and so on, you won´t stop to be astonished.

Not less amazing than this region was our next stop, Bryce Canyon. The difference to Grand Canyon is you can hike without any danger through this Canyon. And by this way you experience it much more. From there we traveled through Zion N.P. to Las Vegas. For the first it was shocking. After scenery just lights, loudness, many people. But although a must. We lived in the Sahara and walked the Strip or went by taxi to see all the hotels and casino.

Form Las Vegas we went across Death Vally to Olancha, Bakersfield and finally to Visalia. From there we went to Sequoia N.P. I´ve never seen such great trees. Afterwards we traveled to a little village called Meriposa. About 30 miles far away from Yosemite N.P., where we spent two days to visit Yosemite Valley, Glacier Point, Yosemite and Bridalvail Falls and to have a look at The Nose (El Captian). For short time two climbers held the speed record, who lives near us, the so called Huber Brothers.

Leavin Yosemite we went against to coast, had a one night stop in Half Moon Bay and arrivied our final destination, San Francisco. Our stay lasted five days, we lived at The Westin St Francis at Union Square. Naturely we visited all the famous locations, Golden Gate Bridge, China Town, Pier 39, Alcatraz Island and so on. It´s a nearly never ending list, but there´s one highlight, you should take time for to do. Have a ride with a bicycle across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito and Tiburon and back by ferry.

I hope, you can imagine, what great locations, we´ve seen and if you have any questions, let me know. If it´s possible I will help you.

Horst

Driving across America

If like myself and hubby, you plan to drive across America, obviously it's easy in these days of Sat Nav, but if like us you rely on good old maps and directions etc, we've found that the Rand McNally website is brilliant. It lets you plan your trip from start to finish, gives mileage calculations, estimated times of the journey, directions and a map of how to get there etc. You can plan your start and finish points, adding stops or editing your route wherever. We used this a few years ago when we flew into San Francisco and out of Los Angeles. In between we visited Napa, Tahoe, Yosemite, Sequoia, Death Valley, Vegas, Grand Canyon, Lake Havasu ..... the website sorted the whole trip out for us and we followed it to the letter. We intend to use it again this year when we fly into Vegas, out of San Franciso, doing various National Parks and other places in between. If you don't have Sat Nav try it - it's very good.

A very helpful website

I have recently ran accross this website that offers a lot of excellent links and services for us travelers.

I went to New York this past week and got a great deal on all the different attractions there. Normally New York is really expensive (even with the Dollar) and I was never able to afford this amazing city. Then a friend of mine told me about Smartsave. It features almost all the different attractions in New York and you can save up to 20% when using this system. All I had to do was to go to the website: www.newyorksmartsave.com/ and print out the different codes for all the attractions I wanted to see. That way my week in New York got a whole lot cheaper and I could even do some shopping ;-)

This a great tip if you want to save some money and still do a lot of sightseeing. I also found out that they offer the same for Amsterdam, London and Germany. So I might be able to use it on one of my next trips too!

Family Photos at the Beach

There is so much to keep track of on a family excursion that it can be tempting to leave behind the camera gear. Lithium batteries installed in consumer electronics (cell phones, cameras, computers) are okay. However, I recommend always carrying those times on board with you. Passengers are limited to two extended-life spare rechargeable lithium batteries.

The new regulation is being put into effect because lithium batteries have the potential to overheat and start a fire.

Why not consider a combination vacation and shopping excursion to the USA? I know that many people are already coming to New York City to take advantage of the Christmas shopping possibilities. There are plenty of other places in the USA that offer great vacation opportunities as well as excellent shopping opportunities. Here are a few suggestions:

New York is still a perennial favorite shopping destination. It is certainly a nice place to visit during the holiday season. Christmas decorations and colored lights abound in the parks and stores around the city. All of the great designer boutiques and big department stores offer a wide assortment of merchandise. New York City is not my top choice for bargain shopping except during the time of the grand bargain sales immediately after the holidays. To get the best bargains, you need to go outside of the city to some of the discount malls like the one at Woodbury Commons.

Florida is a really great place for a winter vacation with included shopping excursion. The weather is usually very pleasant. You can engage in many outdoor activities like golf or tennis. Swimming is possible, but only in heated pools during the winter months. You can go to Orlando and visit the numerous amusement attractions like Disney World, Universal Studios, Sea World and many others. You can also visit the many discount malls located around the state. Fort Lauderdale is only a four hour drive from Orlando, and thirty minutes from Miami. It offers one of the largest discount shopping malls in the USA. The Sawgrass Mills Mall has nearly five hundred shops with factory discount merchandise. The Galleria Mall nearby offers designer merchandise at discount prices.

Las Vegas is the bigggest adult amusement center in the world. The winter weather is also rather pleasant. You can engage in outdoor activities or many indoor entertainments such as gambling or attending shows. It offers several shopping malls and discount malls in and around the city. It is only a few hours driving distance from some of the most spectacular scenic wonders in the USA sucha as the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon.

Luggage Tips

If you read our Holiday Travel Tips you already know the day after Thanksgiving is the most popular day of the year for great shopping bargains. Here are a few packing tips for getting your great deals home while traveling.

Before leaving for your trip ensure your luggage is in decent shape (zippers, wheels, handles). There is nothing more inconvenient than having a wheel or handle fall off while trying to make your flight (ask my husband).

2 in 1. Put your smaller suitcase in a larger case on the way to your destination. When you are ready to return home you have an extra suitcase ready to be filled. You don't need an entire suitcase? Pack a collapsible bag or soft duffle bag.

Watch the weight of your suitcase. The airlines have luggage weight limits and charge quite a bit if you go over that number.

Pack breakables with bubble wrap or even better, carry them on.

If you plan to ship your items home, keep in mind that if the box is too heavy shipping can get very expensive and may not be worth the savings from the sales.

I have met several travelers lately who leave their old clothes behind to make room for the new. It is pretty easy to find a donation center or drop off bin here in the U.S. You can do the same thing for books and magazines you have finished.

Have fun shopping!

Credit Card Tips

This summer my family and I went on a road trip and during the drive we used a credit card to pay for expenses such as gas and food. After several purchases our card was denied. There was no reason for it to be declined so we called the card company and sure enough the card had been put on hold due to the fact that the card was having unusual activity and was "moving."

The card company had called our home to confirm we were traveling but since we were out of town we didn't answer. While we appreciate that our card company was attempting to prevent unauthorized charges it sure was an inconvenience. We now call our credit card company to let them know we will be traveling.

When I researched the subject I found credit cards getting put on hold is especially common with international travelers. If you plan to travel anywhere be sure to call your credit card company and give them the countries and dates you will be traveling.

Keep in mind international transaction fees on credit cards are common when traveling abroad. You will also want to avoid getting cash advances with a credit card while traveling. You will pay a fee to withdraw and you will begin incurring interest from the moment you withdraw. Finally, keep your card numbers and the card companies' phone numbers in your luggage in case you need to report your card lost or stolen.

On the east coast a regular coffee means coffee with cream and sugar. On the west coast it means black.

Many tourists from out of the country are surprised to find that every soda and water is served with ice and beer is served "ice cold" (meaning chilled in ice but never with ice).

Soda, pop, soda-pop, soft drink, and cola all mean the same thing (Coke, Pepsi, Sprite, 7up, etc.) but depending on where you are traveling the person serving you may not be familiar with some of the listed terms. To make things more confusing, in the Deep South and a few other regions "Coke" is a general term for any soft drink.

When ordering tea you need to specify whether you would like a hot tea or an iced tea. The southern states offer sweet iced tea on the menus so you need to specify sweet or unsweetened iced tea. It is unlikely you will find sweet tea anywhere else in the country, except for maybe southern themed restaurants.

To avoid having to send back your drink order your beverage with as many details as possible: Coffee with milk, Sprite no ice, iced tea with lemon.

Have you heard of any other beverage terms? If so, please share.

Just like last year when my older sister and I together with my Aunt Nina went to Italy, We have a great time and lots of local residence we mingle with but personally I have a hard time communicating because of language barrier so I decided to take sort of learning session as I found Learn Italian language it was fun learning new languaes, this reference help me develop my communication skills. Also these Sprachaufenthalt and studiare inglese Londra really give me a great help in learning other languages. I’m so excited to visit other places; I like to travel mostly in Eastern and Western Europe I just love to visit them, if I have a chance I will really take a shoot. I hope Aunt Nina will invite me again to go along with her. I think she will hire me as part time supplementary personnel for her business travel. I can’t wait for the next trip; I just love to talk other people using foreign languages, also I highly recommend corso di inglese a Cork …its great though!

Using your foreign drivers license in the USA

I still get many e-mails asking about using your foreign drivers license in the USA. I also get questions about Interenational drivers licenses.

Normally, you can use your foreign drivers license in the USA. It must be a valid drivers license that has not expired. You can rent a car and drive with your foreign license. Some car rental agencies require that you have been driving at least one year, so your license must be more than one year old. Other rental agencies do not have such restrictions. Many car rental agencies require that you be at least 22 or 25 years old to rent one of their vehicles. They do not wish to rent to young less-experienced drivers. You should check the requirements on the web pages of the rental companies.

Typically, you do not need an international drivers license to drive in the USA. If you have a foreign drivers license that is written only in some language other than English, it may be useful to have an international drivers license. If you are stopped by the police, they must be able to recognize that your drivers license is legitimate and current. An international drivers license gives the information in many languages including English. It can be useful in enabling the police to understand.

Buying a car to tour the USA

I received another e-mail from someone wanting to buy a car in the USA, use it to tour the country, then sell it before returning to Europe. I have repeatedly advised everyone that this is not a good idea. It can be very difficult and very expensive to attempt this. It is usually much easier and cheaper to just rent a car.

It is easy enough to buy a car. If you have some money, you can give it to the seller of a car and the vehicle is yours. There are plenty of cars to buy in all price ranges. You can purchase cars from reputable car dealers, from not-so-reputable car dealers, or from private individuals.

Unfortunately, it is much more difficult to obtain the license tags necessary to legally drive an auto. You must first register the car in the state where you purchased it, then you must provide proof of valid liability insurance before you can purchase the license plates for the vehicle.

In order to register the car in any state, you must provide a permanent residential address in that state. This can be difficult for a tourist. In the days prior to 911, some less reputable dealers might have used a fraudulent address to facilitate such registration. Now, the penalties for such actions can be rather severe, so no dealer is likely to do it.

The price for liability insurance is dependent upon your past driving record in the USA. If you have no past driving history in the USA, they will typically deny coverage or charge some exhorbitantly high rate.

As you can see, this process is not very friendly to tourists coming to the USA for short stays. If you come to the USA as a student or as a worker, you will likely have a residential address in some state and can thus register a car with little difficulty. Your liability insurance rate might still be high due to your lack of driving record in the USA.
