    HI,

I am an 18 year old female from Scotland and i'm planning to travel in America during August and September. I would like to see the best places in America but i'm unsure as to which ones to see. I have only have 4 weeks in America and i'm wondering if you can help me spend my time wisely by given me some points on where to go and what to see, as i would like to get the most out of my visit. Thanks.

That really depends on what you like to see. If you like big cities, museums, restaurants and nightspots; then New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles are great places to visit. If you like great natural wonders; then the Grand Canyon, Yosemite and Yellowstone Park are great places to visit. If you like warm sandy beaches then Florida or Southern California are the places for you to visit.

Remember, the distances across the USA are immense. Even with four weeks, you will only be able to visit a small number of the sights in the USA. I think you should pick only two or three areas to visit, and concentrate on seeing everything you can in those areas.

Re: The best Place's to visit in America

    Hi  slw1301,

Here is a list of some of the top places to visit in the US:-

    Red Rock Country (Sedona, Arizona)

This is the place where countless movies and TV shows have been shot. Whenever Hollywood has portrayed the distinctive splendor of the West, it has gone to Sedona. 1923 saw The Call of the Canyon. After that, Sedona has never looked back. The canyons around the place, the spectacular sandstone towers and the buttes endow the area with a ruggedness that has become a Western characteristic. It is also one of those places that become a part of what constitutes our national identity.

Night-time View from Mt. Washington in Pittsburgh

This is another one among the other top places to visit in the US. You may be surprised at the inclusion of Pittsburgh in this list – especially at such a high spot but there are reasons for this. This is the Steel City and it has its own aesthetic appeal as well as American aptitude for renewal. On the south side of the city is Mt. Washington, a steep hill. What you can see here is the amazing sight of the two rivers – Monongahela and Allegheny joining to form the great Ohio. It looks beautiful at night as there are skyscrapers as well as light from fifteen bridges to see.

    The Upper Mississippi River

This may be one of the less celebrated areas of the US but that does not affect its appeal in any way. If you really want to appreciate the beauty of this river you need to stray from the beaten path. Check out the lesser known areas – areas not mentioned by Mark Twain. Go along the Great River Road alongside the upper reaches through Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota. This is one of the most scenic routes this country has. You’ll go through many hills and 19th century towns.Remember, this one of the most popular and top places to visit in the US, so don't forget to go to this place if you are traveling in the US.

    Hawaii’s Na Pali Coast

Paradise is what people were probably looking for during the early years of settlement in America when they went out towards the Pacific. Hawaii is certainly a place worth having traveled a great part of the world’s land-mass for. The beaches, coral reefs, volcanic peaks, etc are certainly the kind of paradise most people wish to see.

Luxuriant mountains drop about 4000 feet straight into the ocean on the Na Pali coast along the Kalalau trail. Going further inland brings more sights. Here you can see the Hanakapi’ai Falls pour into a crystal pool. You’ll also find many varieties of tropical flowers which provide for a colorful visual impact. This is not an easy place to return home from.

Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco

The Golden Gate Bridge is more than just a bridge between San Francisco and Marin County. It has two 750 foot high towers that seem to disappear into the sky, cables that are stretched like strings on a harp and a unique orange paint job – there are few man-made sights that can compare.

So, plan a luxurious vacation and enjoy the above top places to visit in the US.

It's a continent that we are discussing here. In four weeks you can do a bit or do a lot depending upon your own attitude to new places. You can soak up Southern hospitality,  have sunshine and  oranges, visit the awesome  national parks,  do some shopping, etc.  But  keep in  mind that America is huge and it takes time to reach places even by air. So, plan and budget accordingly. I, for myself, can say that my Florida holiday in the USA was an unforgettable experience.

I also have the same concern on where to go in USA. I am from UK, and on choosing between the capital Washington DC or New York as I have only 5 days to spend.

Any suggestion would be highly appreciated.

    Hi Steve,

There's lots to do in both cities.  But I think that there are 2 key things to consider in choosing whether to go to DC or NY - Money and interests.

Lodging in any U.S. city can be expensive.  But NYC is probably the most expensive.  In Washington DC a lot of the top attractions offer free admission.  So if budget is a concern, DC would be a better bet.

If you want the excitement of a big city with the nightlife and entertainment, then NYC is the place to go.  But if you are interested in US history and enjoy museums, DC is great.
