On Memorial Day weekend at the end of May, they dedicated the new World War II memorial. The politicians all lined up for positive image press opportunities, many of the surviving veterans of World War II came as honored guests and about 100,000 spectators filled the Washington Mall for the event.
In this city of monuments, the lack of a memorial for the World War II veterans was a glaring oversight that deserved being corrected. Washington DC has monuments to our past presidents, monuments to our great statesmen (and some not so great), monuments to our native artists and scientists and memorials to the fallen soldiers of our many wars. Until this year, it had no monument to those who fell in World War II. Now it has one.
The new memorial is located on the Mall between the towering obelisk of the Washington Monument and the classical marble grandeur of the Lincoln Memorial. It lies in the shadow of the obelisk.
Most US cities are fairly modern compared to European standards and they often lack the character and historical perspective of the old world cities. Washington DC is the exception. It is filled with historic significance. Not only does it house the seat of our govenment with all of its beaureucratic functions, but it contains a multitude of monuments, memorials and historic structures.
Washington DC is also one of the few architecurally coherent cities in our country. The city was designed to be our nations capital, and constructed on vacant farmland. The original layout of the city plan was the work of a French architect name L'Enfant. He designed a wonderful city with broad avenues and a huge central park known as the Mall. The central city still bears the mark of L'Enfant's genius, and it is a beautiful place. Over the years since its founding, the open areas have slowly been filled with many elegant monuments and memorials. This year, they added one more. | |
