Everyone knows that Las Vegas Nevada is the gambling capitol of the world and the adult entertainment center of the USA. Fewer people realize that Atlantic City New Jersey is the "Little Las Vegas" of the East Coast. It has the gambling, the entertainment and the glitzy shows just like Vegas but on a much smaller scale.

The primary attraction for Atlantic City is its proximity to New York City, Philadelphia and the Washington DC Baltimore metropolitan area. If you live in one of these major cities of the Northeast, you do not have to take an airplane across the country to find adult entertainment and gambling. You can just jump in your car and drive to Atlantic City.

This seaside resort town was once a popular vacation spot for beach-loving vacationers and for summer residents. It has an old-time boardwalk along a sandy beach and neighborhoods filled with elegant Victorian era vacation homes. Unfortunately, it lost much of its century-old luster and deteriorated somewhat, before enjoying a new resurgence of popularity due to gambling.

Today, Atlantic City is a community of sharp contrasts. It still has its old-time boardwalk along the sandy beach, but that boardwalk is now lined with huge glittering casinos. A few blocks back from the seafront elegance, it has its rather deteriorated neighborhoods. It also has its charming residential neighborhoods with the restored elegance of refurbished Victorian houses.

Weekends brings on a large crowd of visitors from nearby New York City and Philadelphia. They come to see the shows and to gamble, gamble gamble. Donald Trump, the flamboyant New York real estate developer, has invested heavily in his Trump Towers Casino and Taj Mahal Casino. In all, about a dozen casinos line the Atlantic City boardwalk. They are not as large or as spectacular as the ones in Las Vegas, but they are impressive enough.

The Atlantic City shows are also less spectacular than the grand extravaganzas of Las Vegas, but are still quite good. On busy weekends, the major casinos usually feature big name performers, hit singers or professional boxers. Daily, they offer some glitzy Vegas style variety shows. The prices are a bit lower than in Vegas and ticket availability is usually much easier.

If you are vacationing in New York City, and you enjoy gambling or the Las Vegas style nightlife, you can take a jaunt to Atlantic City. It is only a two hour drive by car. There are plenty of excursion busses, trains and tour vans that can take you from the big apple to Atlantic City for the day or for an overnight stay.
