We recently had a lively discussion on these USATourist.com forums concerning a company called "Travel Assured". They were apparantly offering to assist people in getting au-pair jobs in the USA and offering to help obtain work visas. Travel Assured charged a fee for these services. See this thread of posts.
Upon the request of a reader, I investigated the company and found that the address was not valid, the telephone number did not match the address, and some of the claims on the web pages were false. This seems to indicate that the company may have been fraudulently attempting to take money from innocent victims.
Another reader indicated that a new company named "Au Pair Link" was using the same fictitious address and telephone number.
I subsequently read a news report about the growing Internet business of assisting people in getting jobs and visas to work in the USA. This is especially centered around the J-1 cultural exchange visas which allow visitors to work in the USA. The report suggested that this business is rife with fraud, deception and abuse. While some of these Internet service companies are legitimate and do assist people in getting jobs and work visas in the USA, other companies simply rob people or grossly deceive them.
In the most blatant abuses, the fradulent companies simply take your fees and provide no job or no visa. More commonly, the companies do provide assistance in obtaining a job and a visa for a rather substantial fee, but the job proves to be substandard with very low pay, and with high living expenses. These contracts often place the applicant in squalid living conditions earning low wages that are barely enough to pay for the exhorbitant fees of the service company. In the worst examples, women have been deceived into prostitution or the sex industry instead of the jobs initially promised.
I suggest you be very careful in dealing with companies promising to find you jobs in the USA and promising to help you get work visas. If you encounter any company that looks suspicious, please post the information on this forum. I will attempt to investigate the legitimacy of the company and post it in response.
